A set of agility poles can improve footwork, change of direction and movement quality in a small space, but only if they are set out properly. Pole spacing, ground surface, anchoring and safe run-off space all affect how useful the session will be.
Poor setup usually shows up straight away. Poles wobble, bases shift, athletes clip equipment, and drills become more about avoiding hazards than developing movement. A good setup does not need to be complicated, but it does need to fit the surface, age group and purpose of the session.
Start with the Space Available
Before placing a single pole, start with the training area rather than the drill itself. Measure the usable space, check the surface condition and look at how people will enter and leave the station.
Allow enough room not just for the poles, but also for approach and exit zones. If players are accelerating into the poles or turning sharply around them, leave clear run-off space at both ends. A setup that looks compact on paper can quickly feel cramped once a full group is moving through it.
Surface choice will influence the rest of the setup. On grass, spike bases or ground spikes can help hold the poles firmly in place. On artificial surfaces, sports halls or hard courts, weighted rubber bases are usually the safer option. The wrong base for the surface is one of the most common reasons agility poles become unstable during training.
Choose the Right Pole Configuration

For straight-line footwork and running mechanics, poles are usually placed in a line at regular intervals. Setup should begin with the session goal. If the aim is speed and sharp directional change, wider spacing may be more useful than a tight technical pattern. If the aim is controlled movement for younger players or return-to-training athletes, closer but slower work can make more sense.

Agility Pole Spacing
For younger children and beginners, start with wider, forgiving distances that allow them to move confidently and maintain posture. If the poles are too close together, players often shorten their stride awkwardly or rush the pattern. That usually reduces quality rather than improving it.
For older players and adult athletes, spacing can become more specific to the drill. Straight sprint mechanics and longer movement patterns generally need more distance between poles than tight lateral steps or slalom turns.
A useful approach is to set the poles, walk the pattern yourself, and then watch one or two athletes go through before committing the whole group to it.
If you are managing mixed abilities, it is often better to run two stations than force one compromise setup for everyone. One line can support controlled technique, while another allows faster execution.
Set the Poles Securely and Evenly
Once you know the layout, place each pole carefully rather than dropping them in rough positions and adjusting later. Start at one end and work along the line, checking that each base is flat and each pole is upright.
Even a slight lean can affect how athletes move around the equipment, especially in fast slalom drills.
If using ground spikes outdoors, check that the soil is firm enough to hold them. On soft or waterlogged ground, spikes can loosen quickly and the poles may tilt after only a few runs. In those conditions, relocating the station to a firmer area is often better than trying to force the setup to work.
With weighted bases, make sure each base sits fully on the surface without rocking. Indoors, dust or debris under the base can reduce grip. On artificial turf, slight movement can happen after repeated contact, so a quick inspection after the first few repetitions can prevent disruption later in the session.
Build Safety into the Setup
A safe agility pole setup is not just about stopping equipment from falling over. It also means reducing collision risk, avoiding trip hazards and making sure participants understand the movement pattern before they increase speed.
Leave enough width between lanes if more than one person is working at once. Side-to-side drift is common, particularly with younger or less experienced groups. Tight lane spacing may save room, but it can create avoidable contact between participants.
Check what surrounds the station. Benches, bags, spare equipment and water bottles often end up too close to agility areas. Clear them away before the session starts. The same applies to wet patches indoors or heavily worn ground outdoors.
Where sessions include younger children or beginners, keep the first round at low intensity. Demonstrate the route, explain where the finish point is, and show how to leave the station. Many minor accidents happen after the poles, not inside them, because players finish the drill and turn back into the path of the next runner.
Common Setup Mistakes
Most problems come from rushing. Poles set too close to walls or touchlines, poor anchoring, uneven spacing and no clear queueing area are all avoidable.
Another common mistake is using a layout copied from an older age group without adapting it for the participants in front of you.
Tight, complex setups can look demanding, but they do not always produce better movement. If athletes are constantly clipping poles or chopping their steps into unnatural patterns, the drill may be too crowded for the intended outcome.
Adjusting the Setup for Different Environments
A setup that works well on a club training pitch will not always suit a school playground, sports hall or home garden. Portable equipment is useful because it can move between spaces, but each environment places different limits on what is practical.
On grass pitches, weather is the main variable. Wind, soft ground and uneven surfaces can all affect stability.
On artificial surfaces, base grip and surface protection become more important.
In sports halls, storage access and quick setup times often matter just as much as drill design because equipment may need to be cleared promptly for the next activity.
For home users, the challenge is usually space. A shorter line of poles can still work well if the drill is adapted to focus on quick feet, lateral movement or coordination rather than long accelerations. It is better to reduce the drill honestly than squeeze a full training pattern into an area that is too small.
Storage, Checks and Equipment Care
Good setup starts before the session and continues afterwards.
Agility poles should be checked regularly for cracks, bent sections, loose connectors and worn bases. Damaged equipment is more likely to fail during use, especially when it is handled by several groups each week.
After training, wipe down muddy or wet poles before storage where possible. Stack or rack them so they do not warp or become a trip hazard in the store room. Bases should be kept together and counted back in, as smaller components are easy to misplace.
If agility poles are used regularly, it helps to review wear patterns and replacement timing. A simple equipment check sheet can be useful for recording condition, missing parts and whether the set is ready for use.
